Portable extinguishers
Practical companion guidance for portable extinguishers.
Written companion guide · Reviewed 14 October 2026
What and why
Routine visual checks confirm the provided equipment remains in its designated position and has no obvious defect. They do not establish that the type, number or location is suitable for the risk; refer changes to competent advice.
Look without discharging
Identify the asset and location. Confirm access, visible condition, instructions and expected pin or tamper arrangements. Check any pressure indicator against the manufacturer instructions. Some extinguishers have no gauge. Record visible damage, corrosion or evidence of discharge.
Check the maintenance arrangement
Read the service information and use the applicable scheme and manufacturer instructions. Do not apply the same maintenance method to every product. Retain the competent service evidence or other approved maintenance records as applicable.
A missing unit needs an explanation
Do not move equipment from another fire point simply to complete the row. Establish whether a unit has been used, relocated or removed for maintenance. Arrange suitable cover through the premises procedure and raise a defect reference.
Know the boundary
Do not discharge, dismantle or repair equipment during a visual check. People should only attempt firefighting where their training and the emergency plan permit it and escape remains safe. An accessible extinguisher is not a reason to delay raising the alarm.
Use with your premises procedure
This guide supports the printed record. It does not replace the fire risk assessment, system instructions, required specialist records or competent assessment. Work within your training and authority.
