Asbestos still kills around 5000 workers each year.  It is not just a problem of the past it can be present today in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000. When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. When these fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases.

Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires that every employer must make sure that anyone who is liable to disturb asbestos during their normal work, or who supervises those employees, gets the correct level of information, instruction and training so that they can work safely and competently without risk to themselves or others.

Workers and supervisors must be able to recognise asbestos-containing

materials (ACMs) and know what to do if they come across them in order to

protect themselves and others.
